Science based medicine?

The Chiropractic profession in its early development had very little science based medicine theories backing up initial philosophy.  Early Chiropractic pioneers didn't have a consensus of what physiologic or anatomic affect spinal manipulation corrected.  In time rapid changes have occurred within the profession as schools became larger. As the profession grew funding increased for large scale research increased.  Currently the profession has numerous science based peer reviewed studies demonstrating effectiveness in treating musculoskeletal conditions. Condition such as low back pain and neck pain now have science based data proving Chiropractic effectiveness.  So over time more and more studies will be performed on additional conditions but until then many conditions responding to Chiropractic are purely anecdotal to mainstream medicine..  In the world of research funding is the key, the medical community has very large funding for new surgical of pharmacologic therapies through vigorous large scale studies.  Chiropractic research is building up steam as the profession grows.  Currently many new research projects are underway in the profession.  A great resource that is accessible to everyone is the American Chiropractic Association website which has a link explaining everything new in science based medicine.

What does Science based medicine mean?

Science based medicine by definition is performing care that is backed up by scientific research. The findings back up a methods to deliver care.  The backbone of Science Based Medicine is research data accumulated over time.  This includes large scale studies conducted in Universities which when completed are then vetted by peer review.  After this process standards of care are set up and regularly changing as additional studies adjust protocols.

The Future of Chiropractic Research

As healthcare continues to evolve, the future of chiropractic is moving toward a stronger foundation in evidence-based science. Modern research is increasingly focused on understanding the physiologic and neurologic effects of chiropractic adjustments, using advanced tools such as functional MRI, surface electromyography, and neurophysiological testing. These technologies allow scientists to explore how spinal care influences brain activity, pain modulation, and autonomic nervous system function. Additionally, more randomized controlled trials and long-term outcome studies are being conducted to validate chiropractic approaches for conditions like low back pain, headaches, and neurologic dysfunction. By combining clinical outcomes with measurable physiologic changes, the chiropractic profession is building credibility within the broader healthcare community. Future research is also likely to explore integrative models, showing how chiropractic care works synergistically with therapies such as massage, acupuncture, and exercise science. This shift not only supports the effectiveness of chiropractic but also helps patients and physicians understand it as a safe, science-based option for improving musculoskeletal health and nervous system function. Ultimately, ongoing research is paving the way for chiropractic to be recognized not only as a hands-on healing art but as a validated, evidence-driven component of modern medicine.
