What are the symptoms of anxiety?

Anxiety is often accompanied by a variety of symptoms. Most commonly, the anxious person feels a racing heart beat, shaky hands, chest pains, tension in neck with headaches, excessive sweating, dry mouth, and indigestion. Commonly, the anxious person experiences anxiety attacks called panic attacks, which include the above symptoms and usually occur in situations where there is some mental stress associated with it. Some anxiety suffers will also have attacks of the above symptoms even when there is no stress, such as while in bed at night. Many people who suffer the condition live for some time with the problem and many even think they are going crazy. Approximately 15% of Americans will experience a panic attack in their lifetime, while 3% of them have them frequently.

What is the cause of panic attacks?

Anxiety can be the result of either physical or psychological factors. For example, extreme stress can definitely trigger anxiety and so can certain stimulants like caffeine. I believe that the main nutritional factors that can increase anxiety are:

  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine
  • Sugar
  • Deficiency of B vitamins
  • Deficiency of magnesium/calcium
  • Food allergies

By avoiding the above elements in ones lifestyle, a person can go a long way in improving their problems with anxiety.

How can alternative therapies help with anxiety/panic attacks?

In my office I use chiropractic manipulations and lifestyle coaching. Lifestyle changes include an exercise routine and dietary changes. The chiropractic manipulations help by increasing brain activity and bring balance back to the nervous system.  I also encourage the patients to avoid sugar, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and get treated on common food allergies. The common food allergens are soy, dairy, peanuts, egg whites, and wheat. We use the allergy desensitization technique to reverse food allergies. I highly encourage my patients to start taking Valerian Root and Melatonin. I use these three supplements to aid in relaxation of the nervous system and to improve sleep.  We have also seen benefits from oral CBD oil.
